Booligal is only a small town but this weekend it will swell with fun loving (and sheep loving) visitors as they arrive for the running of the 14th Annual Booligal Sheep Races.
Race day is Saturday and gates open at 11am. At 12.30 you can watch the judging of a number of quirky awards including the most creatively dressed and most creatively named sheep. The races begin at 1pm. You can bring your own sheep to race or hire a sheep for the day.
There is more to do than watch the races, though. Try to guess the Weight of “Tracey” (a pet sheep) or visit Booligal Station which will open its gardens to the public for the day. There is also a jumping castle and face painting for the kids and a BBQ to make this fun day for the whole family.
Booligal has suffered through a long drought which made life tough for farmers and the community. The idea for the race day was born when the town was looking for a little fun in their difficult world and the Booligal Sheep Races have grown to become a real tourist attraction.
The Booligal Sheep Races aren’t only about fun. The event raises funds for local charities and this year will also support a new international charity, Thank You Water, which helps provide clean drinking water in Third World countries. After living with drought for so long, the community understands the difference fresh drinking water can make.
On Saturday, go along to the Booligal Sheep Races at the Booligal Cricket Ground and be part of an event that is truly unique. For more information, log onto the website or Facebook!
